WHAT:  It is argued that Lean Construction 4.0 will enable, accelerate, and more importantly, enhance the digital transformation of the Construction Industry using Lean Construction principles and a human-centered design approach at the core. This webinar comprises an introduction to Lean Construction 4.0 and a discussion on its future, where attendees will learn the basic principles of Lean Construction 4.0, impacts for construction organizations, and its future developments.

WHO:   Presented by Vicente A. Gonzalez and Farook Hamzeh

Dr. Hamzeh is a Lean Construction expert. He has conducted theoretical and applied research on several construction projects in the US, Canada, and the MENA region that targeted improving design and construction. Dr. Farook Hamzeh is a Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. He was full time faculty at Colorado State University and at the American University of Beirut. Dr. Hamzeh is an active member of the International Group of Lean Construction (IGLC) and has published extensively on Lean Construction and related topics. His areas of research cover production planning and control, design management, digitalization in construction, and lean project delivery. Dr. Hamzeh’s on-site construction industry experience covers several mega projects including: $1.7 Billion Cathedral Hill Hospital in San Francisco, 1090 ft high Rose Rotana Hotel in Dubai, Losail formula1 racetrack in Qatar, Olympic Tower in Qatar, Al-Amal Oncology Hospital in Qatar, Serail 1374 Building in downtown Beirut, and Sibline Cement factory in Lebanon.

Vicente Gonzalez is a Professor of Construction Engineering and Management within the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Alberta. He has recently awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Digital Lean Construction, which is one of Canada’s most prestigious academic honours. He also holds an Honorary Academic position at The University of Auckland (New Zealand). Vicente has been a prolific author working at the interface of Lean and computer science with 1 book (Lean Construction 4.0: Driving a Digital Revolution of Production Management in the AEC Industry), 2 book chapters, 87 journal papers, and 75 peer-reviewed conference papers to date. He has secured CAN$63+ million in research and teaching grants, and the largest "single" corporate sponsorship in the history of the University of Auckland. Vicente also curated 5 conference proceedings and 1 journal special issue in his career. He is an associate editor and member of editorial boards (e.g., Advanced Engineering Informatics, Lean Construction Journal), international construction engineering and management organizations (e.g., Technical Chair ISARC 2024), not-for-profit's local construction organizations promoting the transformation of the Canadian Construction Industry (e.g., Founding Board of Directors for Lean Design and Construction Canada), and not-for-profit's societies serving indigenous children, youth and families in Edmonton (Board of Directors, Bent Arrow). He has supervised to completion over a hundred undergraduate and graduate students including 13 PhD students.
